How is Sculptra different from dermal fillers?
Traditional dermal fillers add immediate volume by physically filling an area. Sculptra works differently – it stimulates your body to produce its own collagen over time, gradually restoring lost structure and fullness. The results are more subtle and progressive, but also longer-lasting, typically up to two years.
Most clients achieve their desired results with 2-3 treatment sessions, spaced around 4-6 weeks apart. The exact number will depend on the degree of volume loss and your individual goals, which your practitioner will assess at consultation.
Because Sculptra works by stimulating collagen production, results appear gradually over several weeks and months. You’ll typically begin to notice improvement around 4-6 weeks after your first session, with full results becoming visible over 3-6 months.
Sculptra’s active ingredient, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), works as a collagen stimulator rather than a filler. Once injected, the microparticles trigger a mild, controlled inflammatory response in the deeper layers of the skin – essentially signalling to your body that it needs to repair and rebuild. Over the following weeks and months, fibroblasts (the cells responsible for collagen production) are activated, laying down new collagen fibres that gradually restore volume, firmness, and structure from within. As the PLLA particles are slowly and safely absorbed by the body, the collagen they’ve stimulated remains – which is why results are both natural-looking and long-lasting.
Downtime is minimal. You may experience some temporary swelling, redness, bruising, or tenderness at the injection sites in the days following treatment. Most clients feel comfortable returning to their normal routine the same day. Your practitioner will advise you to massage the treated areas for five days post-treatment to ensure even distribution of the product.
